EAST SIDE — Ald. Peter Chico is running unopposed for 10th Ward alderperson, setting him up for a second term representing the Southeast Side in City Council. Chico was the only candidate who filed to run for the 10th Ward seat in next year’s municipal election, according to petitions submitted to the Chicago Board of Elections by Monday’s deadline to make the ballot. Chico, a former Chicago police officer and child welfare case worker, succeeded Susan Sadlowski-Garza in 2023 after Sadlowski-Garza declined to run for reelection. Chico and labor organizer Ana Guajardo advanced to a runoff out of a pool five candidates, with Chico winning the runoff. The ward includes East Side and Hegewisch and parts of South Chicago, South Deering and Riverdale. Early in Chico s first term, the former U.S. Steel South Works site in his ward was announced as the site of the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park, the namesake project of the Quantum Shore Chicago megadevelopment.
