MOUNT GREENWOOD — Don’s Finer Foods in Mount Greenwood was a neighborhood staple for decades. From the time Don Cosentino opened the mom-and-pop grocery store at 10653 S. Homan Ave. in 1972 to its closure in 2007, the store was a place residents could walk to for groceries, cut-to-order meats and candy. Now, almost 20 years after the business closed, the Mount Greenwood community is welcoming Cosentino, 93, back to celebrate and honor his years of service. From 4-6 p.m. Saturday, Cosentino, his family, and the Mount Greenwood Historical Committee will be outside the site of the former business, now a residence, hosting a “pop-up shop” on Halloween. His family will hand out candy while doing their best impression of the retired butcher, wearing his signature white apron and Hanes T-shirt he donned for decades at the shop.
